Karl Evang

Karl Evang (born October 19, 1902 in Kristiana , † January 3, 1981 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian doctor .

Karl Evang was born as the son of Jens Ingolf Evang (1873–1914) and Anna Beate Wexelsen (1875–1954) in Kristiana. In 1924 he began studying medicine at the University of Oslo . In 1926 he became a member of the Mot Dag group , which was initially associated with the Norwegian Communist Party , but soon became independent of this. Evang was active in the Norwegian Support Committee for Spain and in the Clarté group , a socialist-pacifist organization founded in 1925 that was closely linked to the Mot Dag group .

In the 1930s, Karl Evang was a widely recognized speaker. In 1934 he wrote a book entitled " Rassenpolitik and reaction (Raseppolitikk og reaksjo) " and he published numerous articles on medical topics in the Popular Journal for Sexual Enlightenment (Populært Tidsskrift for Seksuell Oplysning) and in the workers' magazine (Arbeidermagasinet) ) . His radio lectures on social medicine topics were very popular. From 1931 to 1939 he was chairman of the Norwegian section of the International Association of Socialist Doctors .

In 1938 he was appointed Medical Director by the Norwegian Council of Ministers. After the attack by the German Wehrmacht on Norway in April 1940, he followed the Nygaardsvold cabinet first to Eastern Norway, and then into exile in London . During the war he organized health care for Norwegians abroad, including staying in the USA . In 1943 he was chairman of a committee of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) , which examined the extent of the food shortage and worked out measures to improve the food supply. So he was networked internationally. After the Second World War he was a co-founder of the WHO . He turned against Norway joining NATO and against Norway participating in the Korean War . He also spoke out against Norway joining the EEC . For reasons of age he resigned in 1972 and spent a year as a visiting professor at Tromsø University . In 1976 he suffered a stroke with aphasia , the consequences of which he suffered until his death in 1981.
