Karl Feuerstein

Karl Feuerstein (born June 11, 1940 in Mannheim ; † November 16, 1999 there ) was a German trade unionist.

Career

In 1955 he began an apprenticeship as a sheet metal worker in the Mannheim plant of Daimler-Benz AG . In 1963 he became a member of the works council for the first time. From 1989 to March 1999 he was Chairman of the Group Works Council. He had to give up this position because of a serious cancer illness. Feuerstein also acted as deputy chairman of the supervisory board.

In 1993/94 Daimler-Benz found itself in a serious crisis. Several tens of thousands of jobs were cut. Feuerstein managed to ensure that no redundancies were issued for operational reasons . In 1993, Feuerstein secured the existence of the Rastatt plant by offering lower wage increases for Daimler employees . In 1994, Feuerstein supported Jürgen Schrempp against his competitor Helmut Werner as the successor to Edzard Reuter as CEO. In 1996, Daimler-Benz wanted to be the first company to implement the then new statutory options for limited continued payment of wages in the event of illness. Feuerstein mobilized the workforce. As a result, the Daimler-Benz board of directors was forced to take this back.

Feuerstein was a councilor for the SPD in Mannheim for 28 years . He was a member of IG Metall .
