Karl Freiberger (born February 6, 1901 ; † unknown) was an Austrian weightlifter . He became middleweight world champion in 1923 and was an Olympian in 1924 and 1928.

Career

Karl Freiberger began weightlifting in Vienna after the First World War . His first club was the athletes' club "Vollkraft" Vienna . He later moved to the "Währinger" athletes club in Vienna and ended his career with the Kraftsport-Verein (KSV) Vienna . His first notable success was the victory at the Austrian Junior Championships in 1920, where he won the championship title at the lightweight in a three-way fight, which consisted of one-armed snatch, one-armed thrusting and two-armed thrusting, weighing 262.5 kg.

In the following years he achieved a very successful career, which culminated in winning the world middleweight title at the 1923 World Cup in Vienna. He won in Vienna in a four-way battle with 387.5 kg in front of his compatriot Leopold Friedrich (weightlifter) and the Latvian Vice World Champion from 1922 Alberts Ozoliņš . A year earlier he came in the German Fighting Games in Berlin in the pentathlon with 435 kg behind Heinrich Lang from KV 95 Stuttgart on the 2nd place.

In 1924 Karl Freiberger qualified to take part in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris . In Paris he reached 487.5 kg in the pentathlon and landed on the thankless 4th place behind Charles Rigoulot , France , 502.5 kg, Fritz Hünenberger , Switzerland , 490 kg and Leopold Friedrich, 490 kg in front of him.

Then came a short period in which Karl Freiberger started for the Bundesbahner SV Wien , an association that belonged to the Austrian Workers 'Athletes' Association. For this association he was in Vienna in 1926 at the 2nd Int. Workers 'gymnastics and sports festival (Workers' Olympics) at the start and won the light heavyweight division in a three-way fight that consisted of one-armed snatch, one-armed pushing and two-armed pushing, weighing 307.5 kg.

Before 1928 he was part of the general Austrian Heavy Athletics Association has returned. He qualified again for participation in the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam , where he finished 6th in the light heavyweight division with 322.5 kg.

After that, he continued to lift for many years and took very good places at Austrian championships, now starting in the heavyweight division , but did not take part in any international championships. In 1936 he tried to qualify again in the heavyweight division for participation in the Olympic Games in Berlin . He achieved 355 kg in the Olympic three-way battle in Vienna, with which he took 3rd place behind Rudolf Schilberg and Karl Schmidt. However, this result was no longer sufficient for participation in Berlin.

Then he ended his career.
