Karl Gaertner

Karl Gaertner (born September 27, 1823 in Berlin , † January 18, 1886 in Magdeburg ) was an engineer , entrepreneur and politician of the National Liberal Party (NLP).

Life

The bourgeois gardener attended the Kölln High School in Berlin until 1841 . He then studied mechanical engineering at the Beuth'schen Gewerbeinstitut Berlin .

He completed his practical training from 1845 in Burtscheid and then in Belgium at the Cockerill machine factory in Seraing .

In 1847 he went to Buckau near Magdeburg, where he became an engineer with the United Hamburg-Magdeburg Steamship Company . In 1848 he worked briefly in the Prussian War Ministry in the naval department and then in the central office of the Royal Eastern Railway . From 1850 to 1855 he worked as a technical director in railway car construction in Halle (Saale) before he returned to Buckau in 1855 and built an iron rolling mill there, which existed until 1884.

Gaertner was very active in society and was involved in many clubs and associations. In 1857 he was one of the founding members of the Magdeburg district association of the VDI . In 1869 and 1876 he was elected to the main board of this association. He became a member of the National Liberal Party and, elected in the constituency of Wanzleben, entered the Prussian House of Representatives in 1866 and 1867 . From 1875 until his death he represented the city of Magdeburg there. He was a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Saxony and worked in the magistrate of Magdeburg. He was also a member of the college of merchant elders and the board of directors of insurance companies. For the years 1886 and 1887 he was elected chairman of the VDI. However, he died after the first few days in office.

Honor

The city of Magdeburg has named a street ( Gaertnerstraße ) in his honor.
