Karl Gottlieb Prätzel (born April 2, 1785 in Halbau , today Iłowa , Poland , † January 13, 1861 in Hamburg ) was a German poet, writer and journalist.

Life

Karl Gottlieb Prätzel's father was an electoral palace gardener in Halbau in Lausitz . After graduating from the grammar school in Sorau (today Żary ), he came to Leipzig University in 1804 to study theology. Since the family resources were ultimately no longer sufficient, he accepted a position as a private tutor in Hamburg with a Meyer family, with whom he remained closely connected until his death. With this family he moved to Oldesloe in Holstein in 1820 and returned to Hamburg a few years later. He spent the rest of his life there and died unmarried on June 18, 1861.

Prätzel lived as a private scholar and was a very keen writer of fiction. The literary historian Rudolf von Gottschall (1823-1909) ranked him among those poets who, in contrast to Emanuel Geibel's (1815-1884) serious works, described the joy of life and especially popular life in a cheerful and carefree manner. Many contributions to contemporary paperbacks and magazines also came from Prätzel. He published two weekly papers, the childhood friend in 1816 and 1817 and the house friend in 1829. From 1847 on, Prätzel worked for theater reviews at the Hamburg correspondent . A collection of 535 of his works are in the State and University Library Hamburg .
