Life

He also studied composition and piano at the Graz Conservatory (Diploma 1954), as well as music theory at the Vienna Conservatory and the University of Vienna .

During his studies he was able to record his first successes as a composer. A trip to Romania in the early 1950s shaped the style of the following years, whereby Haidmayer's characteristic frequent use of the tritone or church tonal, especially Lydian, melody can be explained. Numerous concert tours as a pianist were followed by an appointment as professor at the Graz University of Music (most recently full professor for composition and music theory).

Music genre

Piano music dominates the early work. After that, Haidmayer's compositional work was shaped by chamber music and orchestral works, and since the late 1970s he also turned to electronic music. In view of this diversity, a stylistic fixation of his musical work seems almost impossible. Nevertheless, certain significant characteristics stand out in Haidmayer's music: for example, his preference for distinctive rhythms and the melodies designed in large lines.

He once described his open style of music as follows:

I wrote in strict and free dodecaphony and made use of graphic notation, but I strive to come as close as possible to my tonal intentions. The rhythmic element is often in the foreground for me; I take the stand of a-thematic, motif-oriented, free tonal, but formally strict music. Nowadays my music is improvisationally unbound, stylistically completely free, not obliged to any fashion and above all in such a way that I personally like it and I am completely convinced of what I write. I don't care about the opinions of critics.
