Karl Harnoncourt

Karl Harnoncourt (born August 12, 1934 in Graz ) is an Austrian doctor and university professor.

Life

Karl Harnoncourt was born as the son of Eberhard Harnoncourt and his wife Ladislaja, née Countess of Meran. He studied medicine and received his doctorate in 1958. Training as an internist at the LKH Graz was followed by his habilitation in 1973 . From 1977 to 1999 he headed the 2nd Medical Department of the LKH Graz . From 1989 he was Chairman of the Institute for Preventive Medicine Joanneum, 1989–91 President of the Austrian Society for Pneumology , from 1993 Chairman of the Styrian Provincial Health Council , from 1995 Director of the Styrian Hospital Society KAGes.

His merits include blood gas analyzers, which were manufactured by AVL in the 1960s on the basis of Harnoncourt's research results, ultrasound examinations as the basis for spirometry and the establishment of a university clinic for psychosomatics and psychotherapy in Bad Aussee on his initiative.

For nine years, from 2003 to 2012, Harnoncourt was chairman of the Styrian Hospice Association.

Personal and family

Karl Harnoncourt is married and has two sons and three daughters. His brothers are the conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the theologian Philipp Harnoncourt . He is a great-great-grandson of Archduke Johann (1782-1859) and a great-grandson of Franz von Meran .
