Karl Heinrich Thielmann (born December 7, 1802 in Nicolai in Upper Silesia , † August 14, 1872 in St. Petersburg ) was a German military doctor in the Russian service.

Life

Karl Heinrich Thielmann grew up in poor circumstances. In 1817 he acquired the patent as a surgical assistant. From 1823 to 1827 he studied first philology, then medicine in Breslau . Before completing his studies he had to leave Breslau and he became tutor to Theodor Heinrich Wilhelm Lerche (1791–1847), director of the eye hospital in St. Petersburg. In 1831 Thielmann completed his medical studies in Dorpat , and in 1832 he also obtained his medical doctorate there.

He then returned to St. Petersburg, where from 1832–1833 he was a naval doctor of the 18th fleet equipage, and from 1833–1837 a doctor in the naval hospital in Oranienbaum . 1837–1868 he held the position as senior physician at the Peter Paul Hospital in St. Petersburg. From 1845 he was also director of Laval's children's asylum and from 1851 "honorary body oculist" at the court of Tsar Nikolaji . From 1868 Thielmann worked as a doctor in his own private practice.

From 1844 to 1860, Thielmann was, alongside Maximilian Heine and Rudolph Krebel, editor of the St. Petersburg magazine “Medicinische Zeitung Russlands”.
