Karl Heinrich Wilhelm Völcker (born July 21, 1798 in Lich , † January 31, 1841 in Gießen ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Life

Karl Heinrich Wilhelm Völker, the son of the preacher Johann Heinrich Völcker († 1810) and the pastor's daughter Ernestine born. Draw (* 1779), studied theology and philology at the University of Giessen . On December 14, 1818 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD ; However, he did not complete his dissertation on the uncertain author of the Dialogus de oratoribus . In the following year, 1819 , he completed his habilitation at the University of Classical Philology and has held lectures as a private lecturer ever since.

In 1818 Völcker entered the Grand Ducal Gymnasium in Giessen , where he worked as a collaborator and later as a full teacher. In addition to his school service and his work at the university, he wrote scientific papers on Greek mythology , in particular on the geographical location of Greek myths and cults. His work was lively discussed by his colleagues. Völcker was in contact with Karl Otfried Müller and Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker by letter for a long time .

Völcker's work was affected by a protracted lung disease that caused him to retire on March 11, 1831. A few years later he founded a private school, where Gustav Baur taught, among others . After Völcker's death at the age of 42, Baur ran this school until the end of the current school year and then closed it.
