Gustav Adolf Ludwig Baur (born June 14, 1816 in Hammelbach , † May 22, 1889 in Leipzig ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

The forester's son from the Odenwald Gustav Baur, brother of the theologian Friedrich Wilhelm Baur and the politician Ludwig Baur , attended the Darmstadt grammar school from 1828 to 1834 . From 1834 to 1838 he studied theology at the University of Giessen . From his first semester onwards, he also taught at the private school of Karl Heinrich Wilhelm Völcker (1798–1841), which he headed after his death until autumn 1841 and then dissolved. Doctor of Philosophy on September 8, 1840 Ph.D., obtained a licentiate in theology on October 9, 1840 and worked as a private lecturer in Giessen from 1841. On October 27, 1843, he became a repetitionist there, on April 20, 1847, he was an associate professor of theology, and in 1849 he was awarded a doctorate in theology by the University of Königsberg . Since he refused a call to the Königsberg University, he was given a full professorship in theology on March 1, 1849 in Giessen. In Giessen he had initially read about the Old Testament, practical theology and theological encyclopedia, later about dogmatics and the history of dogma.

In 1861 he became senior pastor of St. Jacobi Church in Hamburg , where he gained an excellent reputation as a pulpit speaker. In 1870 he went to the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig as a professor of practical theology, became director of the preachers' college and university preacher, and later a secret church council. Baur had also taken part in the university's organizational tasks. He was dean of the theological faculty and rector in 1874/75 . Theologically he was a follower of Schleiermacher . One of his Leipzig students was the later editor of the Christian World, Martin Rade .
