Hermann Steinfurth (born May 18, 1823 or 1824 in Hamburg ; † February 7, 1880 there ) was a German painter and graphic artist from the Düsseldorf School of Painting and the Hamburg School .

Life

Hermann Steinfurth was born as the son of the iron and haberdashery dealer Friedrich Steinfurth on May 18, 1823 or 1824 in Hamburg. He received his first artistic training from Gerdt Hardorff the Elder, who was a drawing teacher at the Johanneum School of Academics . In 1841 he traveled to Düsseldorf , where he studied portrait painting as a private student with Karl Ferdinand Sohn and then at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow in the first painting class. This was followed by a study trip to Belgium and the Netherlands , where he copied portraits of Anthony van Dyck to hone his skills in portraiture. In 1847 he returned to Hamburg. He had his studio in the street Herrengraben 97 on Herrengrabenfleet , where his father's business was after the great fire of 1842 (the old residential and commercial building at Mühlenbrücke 139 burned down) and his brother Friedrich lived there too.

In 1848 Hermann Steinfurth won a competition organized by the Hamburg Artists' Association and was commissioned to paint the three-part altarpiece for the new main church of Sankt Petri . In order to study the altarpiece, he traveled to Munich and Düsseldorf and finally painted the three-part altarpiece in Düsseldorf, where he studied history painting again in the master class of Josef Wintergerst at the art academy in 1850 . When he was finished with the order, he delivered the picture, which was donated in 1851 by the Hamburg Artists' Association to the main church of Sankt Petri. On the middle part was the resurrection of Christ . The central section was destroyed in one of the air raids of Operation Gomorrah during World War II. The church itself was otherwise largely unscathed. The side panels were also undamaged. The left part shows the apostle Peter , according to Acts 10:14, and on the right part Paul , according to Romans 14:17. At the bottom of the picture of Paul is the inscription tablet with the inscription:

"Donated as an altarpiece to the Sanct Petrikirche by the Hamburg artists' association Anno Domini 1851"

In 1851 he went on a long journey through Germany, Austria and Italy . From 1853 he worked in Hamburg, only interrupted by occasional short trips. In 1863 his father had given up the business and Hermann Steinfurth now had his studio at Bohnenstrasse 17, but lived in Bohnenstrasse 3. In 1867 he still lived there, but had his studio at Fuhlentwiete 92. From 1870 to 1877 he lived and worked at Koppel 93 and 94. From 1877 until his death he lived and worked at Lüneburger Strasse 3 (now Stralsunder Strasse 3) on Hansaplatz on the second floor.

In 1877 he offered to lead a life drawing class at the trade school founded by the Patriotic Society in 1862 , which was located in the building of the Museum of Art and Industry and which was the forerunner of today's Hamburg University of Fine Arts . It should be a preparation for those preparing to attend art school. The offer was accepted and the class set up with him as the teacher. Hermann Steinfurth, who remained unmarried for life, taught there until 1880 and died after a serious illness on February 7 of the same year at the age of 56 in Hamburg. He bequeathed some oil paintings to the Hamburger Kunsthalle, to which he had already given a painting the previous year. The Kunsthalle then honored him with a memorial exhibition.

Hermann Steinfurth was a member of the Hamburger Künstlerverein and the Kunstverein in Hamburg and was chairman of both associations for a while . He was also a member of the Düsseldorf artists' association Malkasten , of which Crignic had been a member since 1846. He was a founding member and deputy chairman of the Düsseldorf chess club , whose first chess tournament took place at the artists' club Malkasten in 1855. Later he was a member of the board of trustees of the Society for Reproductive Art in Vienna, founded in 1871 . He was also a member of the Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstgenossenschaft .
