Robert Schneider (painter, 1809)
Robert Schneider (born February 25, 1809 in Dresden , † October 21, 1885 in Hamburg ) was a German painter. He painted the bourgeois and artistic elite of the Hanseatic cities, especially in Hamburg and Lübeck.
Life
The son of a Saxon court counselor studied at the Dresden Art Academy and was a student of Heinrich Gotthold Arnold . In 1832 he made the acquaintance of the art historian Carl Friedrich von Rumohr , who was his patron and prompted him to come to northern Germany. Schneider was a contemporary of Friedrich Carl Gröger and Günther Gensler and is considered "as a successor to Gröger in the favor of Hamburg". Numerous stays in Schleswig-Holstein: Eckernförde (1830), Schleswig (1834), Plön (1835, 1837, 1841), Kiel (1836, 1840). A study trip took him to Italy via Paris in the summer of 1842.
He is described as “a master of portrait resemblance” and is thus on the preliminary stage of the emerging portrait photography, although his pictures still have clearly romantic traits and are often characterized by that room-filling gaze of the depicted, which is characteristic of many portraits of the Romantic period and visualized the dominance of those portrayed in the upper-class and noble salons. “Regardless of where you stand in the room, the person being portrayed always seems to be looking at you”, a style element that enjoyed great popularity in portrait painting in the mid-19th century.
In addition to the portrait of Helene Franziska Binder, daughter of actor and theater director Friedrich Ludwig Schmidt , and wife of the mayor Nicolaus ties are in the catalog "The Low German man in Hamburg image of the past," portraits of Anna Hanbury, Nicolaus Binder, Mary Frances Merck, born . Schröder with children, Georg Heinrich Siemers, Lisette Amelie Siemers and Jacob von Hosstrup. All pictures were exhibited in 1928 at the “Hamburger Bildnisse” exhibition in the Museum of Hamburg History , together with other works by north German portrait painters of the Romantic era such as Friedrich Carl Gröger, Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein , Jacob Gensler and Carl Theodor Demiani . The exhibition in the Museum of Hamburg History was therefore not only a mirror of North German portrait painting, but also provided an insight into the artistic, economic and political elite of the Hanseatic city. "We have here," with reference to Robert Schneider, "the products of a painting culture that was the property of that time and was also communicated to the less talented."
Works by Robert Schneider can be found in the Dresden State Art Collection , the Museum Behnhaus Lübeck and the Hamburger Kunsthalle . Robert Schneider was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association .
In the Ohlsdorf cemetery , in the area of the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery , near the main entrance of the cemetery, the graphic artist and painter, among others, is commemorated on the double collective grave of Robert Schneider, whose name is on the painter's grave plate on the right.
