Johann Matthias Commeter (born March 10, 1791 in Wilster ; † 1869 ) was a German insurance broker, businessman , art dealer , collector and patron .

Live and act

Coming from a weaving family , the Commeter collected art at an early age. In 1823 he moved to Hamburg, where he took the Hamburg citizens' oath on May 28, 1824 . He was a guest at the Hamburger Kunstverein , where he met the art dealer Georg Ernst Harzen (1790–1863). In 1824 he transferred the management of the Commeter Gallery to Commeter . Commeter and Harzen lived in Harzen's house on Neuer Wall 39 in a close, friendly and business relationship.

In 1847 Commeter handed over the management of the gallery to Wilhelm Becker and traveled to Italy , where he conducted research on art history and in 1862 wrote two small essays. Since Harzen wanted to support a public museum that was being established, Commeter and Harzen divided their assets and shares in the art collection in 1856. After Harzen's death in 1863, Commeter settled his estate and decided to leave his share to the museum as well. The Harzen-Commeter collection opened in the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 1869 comprised 30,000 sheets, which was immeasurably valuable. These were high-quality old master prints, drawings and paintings acquired over several decades.
