Moritz Ferdinand Schmaltz (born June 18, 1785 in Stolpen , † February 15, 1860 in Hamburg ) was a German Lutheran pastor and theologian.

Life

After studying Protestant theology in Leipzig and Wittenberg , Schmaltz became tutor to Christian Karl Stübel in Wittenberg in 1812 . After working as a pastor in Wehlen (1814–1816) and Vienna (1816–1819), he was pastor at the Dreikönigskirche (Dresden) , where he was a popular preacher (especially with anti-Catholic sermons). In 1830 he became a doctor of theology . In 1833 he was appointed main pastor of the St. Jacobi Church in Hamburg and in 1855 rose to senior level in the Ministry of Spirituality and thus to the Church's spiritual director. Many of his sermons were printed (sometimes in multiple editions), and his confirmation gift became a bestseller.

Moritz Ferdinand Schmaltz is commemorated on the double grave slab, main pastors to St. Jacobi / pastors to St. Jacobi of the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery, Ohlsdorf Cemetery .
