Karl Holdhaus (born January 21, 1883 in Baden near Vienna, † June 30, 1975 ) was an Austrian zoologist .

Life

Holdhaus grew up in Carinthia. He studied zoology and geology at the University of Vienna . In 1905 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. From 1905 to 1949 he worked at the Natural History Museum in Vienna . After Ludwig Ganglbauer died, Holdhaus took care of the coleopterological collection there. He contributed to their expansion, particularly through collections in the Eastern Alps. From 1933 Holdhaus was director of the zoological department.

Holdhaus worked in the fields of geology, taxonomy, biogeography and museology, but was above all a zoogeographer. He explored the Mediterranean countries, the European high mountains (especially the Alps and Carpathians), the patterns of distribution of the European fauna caused by the ice ages of the Pleistocene, the fauna of continental and oceanic islands and the distribution of insects on earth.
