Karl Holl (music writer)

Karl Holl (born January 15, 1892 in Worms , † October 3, 1975 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German musicologist .

Life

Karl Holl was born as the son of the engineer Franz Holl and his wife Auguste (née Fischer). From 1901 he attended the humanistic high school (today Rudi-Stephan-Gymnasium ) in Worms, which he graduated from high school in 1910. From 1910 to 1913 he studied musicology, German literature, philosophy and art history (doctorate in 1913) at the universities of Munich and Bonn , as well as composition with Edgar Istel and piano with Franz Dorfmüller .

Professionally, he initially worked as an employee of the free Odenwald School in Oberhambach, then from 1915 to 1917 as a lecturer at the Frankfurt Music School . From 1918 to 1943 he worked for the Frankfurter Zeitung , first as a music advisor and from 1922 as its music editor . He was considered an influential music critic. At the same time, he worked from 1925 to 1933 as secretary of the Association of German Music Critics . After the Second World War he held the role of Opera Director of the Frankfurt am Main municipal theaters in the 1945/46 season . From 1946 until his retirement in 1958 he was Ministerial Director for the areas of theater, music and film in the Hessian Ministry of Culture in Wiesbaden. He looked after part of the estate of the composer Rudi Stephan (today Worms City Archives).

Karl Holl's brother was the temporary Berlin theater director Fritz Holl .
