Karl Oberste-Brink

Karl Oberste-Brink (born June 15, 1885 in Langendreer near Bochum , † January 17, 1966 in Essen ) was a German geologist, paleobotanist and mining specialist.

Life

His father was a miner (Steiger) in Witten . After graduating from high school in 1905, he completed an apprenticeship as a mine separator in Witten and studied mine engineering and geology at the Bergakademie Berlin from 1907 to 1911. After the exam to become a Markscheider at the Oberbergamt Dortmund in 1911 he worked at the Zeche Zollern-Germania of the Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks AG (GBAG) in Dortmund. In 1914 he received his doctorate from the University of Münster with a dissertation on paleobotany under Theodor Wegner (1880-1935). In 1916 he became head of the mining damage department of GBAG in its headquarters in Gelsenkirchen, was granted power of attorney in 1925 and in 1926 was head of the mining, mining, geology and water management divisions of the newly founded United Steelworks . In 1937 he became director, in 1940 he became mine director and in 1963 he retired. In 1925 he passed the examination to become a qualified geologist at the Prussian Geological State Institute and in 1929 he completed his habilitation in applied geology at the Bergakademie Clausthal. From 1929 to 1931 he was a private lecturer for mining damage studies and applied geology and then associate professor for mine sheath studies at the TH Aachen .

He was a leading mining expert in the Ruhr area (including mining damage with numerous reports, water management) and there he developed a uniform raft description and he published a shaft description of the mines of the United Steelworks in 27 volumes.

In 1941 he became a member of the Leopoldina .

He was 25 years on the board of the Emschergenossenschaft and 11 years its chairman.
