Karl Otto Scherner

Karl Otto Scherner (born April 23, 1934 in Worms ; † April 18, 2019 ) was a German lawyer and university professor .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1953, Karl Otto Scherner, son of a farmer, began studying oriental studies and law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , which he continued at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . In 1963 he passed his second state examination in law. At the same time, he received his doctorate as Dr. jur. right of withdrawal due to non-performance with the dissertation . Investigations on German private law doctrine of modern times . In 1971 he completed his habilitation at the University of Mainz at the chair of Professor Johannes Bärmann with the habilitation thesis Salmannschaft, Servusgeschäft and venditio iusta. Early forms of arbitrary mediation in old German private law . He then became an associate professor there in 1971 and, in 1973, after Johannes Bärmann's retirement, professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

In 1979, Scherner accepted a professorship at the Law Faculty of the University of Mannheim and taught civil law, German, comparative and other European legal history until his retirement in 2002.

Scherner died in April 2019, a few days before his 85th birthday.
