Karl Pfeifenberger (born September 23, 1955 ) is a former Austrian politician ( BZÖ ) who was sentenced to imprisonment for infidelity. He was a member of the Carinthian provincial government and first deputy governor.

Life and work

After graduating from high school, Pfeifenberger worked for the Raiffeisen organization for around 17 years. After two positions in the technical area, Pfeifenberger became managing director of a Lavanttaler poultry company in 1996.

politics

Pfeifenberger was a member of the Carinthian state parliament from 1994 to 1999 as a member of the FPÖ . In 1999, Jörg Haider surprisingly brought him to the Carinthian provincial government as regional councilor . In 2001 he was promoted to First Deputy Governor after Mathias Reichhold had left . In the state government of Haider III , Pfeifenberger was most recently responsible for the finance, economy and tourism departments until 2005. On January 28, 2005 Pfeifenberger announced his resignation as a member of the Carinthian provincial government and left the provincial government on February 21st.

Pfeifenberger cited the reason for his resignation that he wanted to switch to the private sector. One of his political goals was to achieve the zero deficit in Carinthia by 2004. Pfeifenberger missed this goal, however. He boosted winter tourism with high investments, but made enemies through his interference in Carinthia advertising . Pfeifenberger had a great influence in this area as finance and economic advisor and owner representative of most of the state-owned companies. He fought the managing directors of the Carinthian Economic Development Fund because they fought off his operational interventions. The chairman of the board of directors of the airport company resigned because he rejected Pfeifenberger's forced low-cost airline and the appointment of the new airport director.

Pfeifenberger recorded a success that he was able to bring the AT&S group to Carinthia and that Hannes Androsch was won as a tourism investor. However , he was unable to realize numerous large projects such as a thermal bath at Lake Klopein , a private clinic in Millstatt and the “Ravensburger Spieleland” in Döbriach . In his last term of office, Pfeifenberger came under heavy criticism due to the financial difficulties of the Wörtherseebühne .

Conviction for infidelity

On February 13, 2018, it was announced that Pfeifenberger was legally charged with breach of trust. In the subsequent trial, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison at the Klagenfurt Regional Court on November 15, 2018, of which four months were unconditional. The court awarded Heta Asset Resolution AG 392,000 euros in damages. Pfeifenberger filed an annulment complaint and an appeal. However, the Graz Higher Regional Court upheld the judgment and the extent of the sentence. It justified the decision, among other things, with the fact that there is “an almost perfidious cooperation between several decision-makers and companies”. Payments have been split up "so as not to puzzled others and to keep everything under the covers". Based on the one and a half year duration of the crime, it can be seen that "considerable criminal energy" was in it. In addition, Pfeifenberger has personally enriched himself, which is not always the case with infidelity.
