Karl Richter (Germanist)

Karl Richter (born December 22, 1936 in Warnsdorf , Czechoslovakia ) is a German philologist and literary scholar .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1956 in Oberstdorf, Richter began studying German , history and geography at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and was a scholarship holder of the Maximilianeum Foundation in Munich . In the winter semester of 1964/1965, he did his doctorate with a dissertation on the subject of resignation - a study of Fontane's work , and in 1970 his habilitation with a thesis on literature and natural science. A Study of Enlightenment Poetry . In 1973 Richter was appointed to the chair for modern German philology and literary studies at the University of Saarland . In 2002 he retired .

In addition to his teaching activities, Karl Richter was particularly concerned with Goethe research . His most important publications include the so-called Munich edition of all Goethe publications in 20 volumes (in 31 sub-volumes), which was completed in 1999. In total, he published over 100 different works.

For a long time he has been paying particular attention to interdisciplinary issues, which he pursues, for example, in his book project "Poetry and Natural Science in Goethe's Spätwerk". At the latest since the end of his active teaching activity, Richter has been serving a democratic civil culture . For a long time he was the spokesman for the Saarland State Theater Citizens 'Initiative and also in the Alliance of Saarland Citizens' Initiatives Mobile Radio . In the series of publications of the Competence Initiative for the Protection of Humans, Environment and Democracy , which was founded in May 2007, he is co-editor of the series of publications, which was published for the fourth time in early 2010.

He founded with Dr. Franz Adlkofer founded the Pandora Foundation. The foundation wants to help ensure that the protection of people and nature is given priority over the interests of politics and industry. To this end, state and industrial institutions must dispute the primacy of research.

Karl Richter is married and has two grown children.
