Karl Saulheimer

Karl Saulheimer (born April 29, 1929 in Wolfsheim ; † February 16, 2015 in Worms ) was a German trade unionist. Among other things, he was chairman of the DGB district of Worms-Alzey, holder of the Federal Cross of Merit and honorary ring holder of the city of Worms.

Life and work

After attending the elementary schools in Armsheim and Mainz-Bretzenheim , Karl Saulheimer practiced various trades, such as agricultural assistant, construction worker or caretaker. In the period from 1956 to 1988 he was a full-time trade union official; from 1968 to 1988 he was district chairman of the German Federation of Trade Unions. In these functions he achieved revolutionary changes in the collective agreement for the leather union for the time . At the head of the health insurance company AOK Worms-Alzey, he was active as alternate chairman of the board.

Saulheimer achieved particular merits through the establishment of the DRK vocational training center, where, as DGB district chairman, he achieved that the Worms location was selected from among the local competitors.

Shaped by the experiences of the Second World War , Saulheimer took part in the “ Alliance against Nazi rallies ”. In Förderverein project Osthofen the Osthofen Concentration Camp Memorial , he was deputy board member.

Karl Saulheimer died after illness on February 16, 2015 in Worms.

After working life

In 1988 Saulheimer retired from professional life. He used the time he had now gained to found the “Wormser Lederindustrie” association together with others in 2001. Saulheimer was active in the "Alliance against Nazi rallies" until the end. During his numerous visits to schools, he told the young people about his war experiences.

Honors

Karl Saulheimer was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit with ribbon. He was awarded the City of Worms Ring of Honor by the Mayor of Worms, Michael Kissel . The German Trade Union Confederation honored his socio-political commitment with the Hans Böckler Medal. He wore the badge of honor of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate .
