Michael Kissel (born January 15, 1955 in Worms ) is a German politician ( SPD ). He was Lord Mayor of Worms from 2003 to 2019 and has been President of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Association of the Workers' Samaritan Association since November 2019 .

Professional background

After primary school, Michael Kissel attended Diesterweg secondary school in Worms, which he graduated from secondary school in 1970. He then began training in administration with the city of Worms and was taken on as a clerk. With his ascent into the senior civil service career in 1976, he was first head of department and later head of department for environmental protection and agriculture. In 1987 he attended the Administration Academy in Mainz and achieved a higher civil service career.

In 1991 he became head of the ministerial office of Florian Gerster in the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry for Federal Affairs and Europe , and one year later he worked in the State Chancellery of Rhineland-Palatinate .

politics

From 1992 to 2003 Kissel was mayor of the Monsheim community . In 1996 he became the head of the water supply association for the Seebach area in Osthofen and in 1997 the head of the central Pfrim valley wastewater association . Since 2003 he has been Lord Mayor of the city of Worms and a member of the main committee of the German Association of Cities . In April 2011, Kissel was re-elected with 53 percent of the votes cast. In 2018 he ran for a third term, in the first ballot on November 4, he received 21.9 percent of the votes and thus ran in the runoff election against Adolf Kessel (CDU). Kissel lost the runoff election on November 18, in which he received around 26.9 percent of the vote. His term of office as Mayor of Worms ended on July 1, 2019.

In 2013 he was elected chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate City Council.

Volunteering

Up until his election as mayor, Kissel was the district chairman of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) in Worms. He was the patron of the Worms helps project after the flood disaster in Sri Lanka in 2005. At the end of November 2019, Kissel was elected President of the ASB regional association Rhineland-Palatinate.
