List of Mayors of Worms
The list of mayors of Worms contains all mayors or lords of the city of Worms since it was incorporated into the Republic of Mainz in autumn 1792 and then in the French Republic in spring 1793 .
history
Since the early twelfth century, council bodies can be identified for the city, which was then still under episcopal rule. These developed into a city council in the following century, which was led by two mayors first mentioned in 1220. In the following three centuries the citizens freed themselves more and more from episcopal rule - also by warfare - until a solution was found with the revenge of 1522, which was valid until 1792: The city was led by two councils ( Council of Thirteen and Common Council ), which were under the direction of the town master , who also carried out the official business. Since its members were elected for life, the Council of Thirteen played the main role in both bodies.
With the first French occupation in 1792, the Council of Thirteen was replaced by an established municipality , whose chairman ran the city. Due to the changing fortunes of war in the First Coalition War , the Thirteen Council was able to regain its position several times, but from 1798 it was finally replaced in the management of the city by the municipality.
The title of mayor varied in the following years. From 1792 to 1801 there was no actual mayor, his task was taken over by the chairman of the municipality. From 1801 a Maire was appointed by the Prefect of the Département du Mont-Tonnerre . From 1816 the official title was again mayor, who has now been named by the Grand Ducal Hessian government. With the introduction of the Grand Ducal Hessian municipal code in 1821, the mayor became an electoral officer; the first election was held in 1822. The mayor of Worms has been called Lord Mayor since 1888 .
Up to and including 1874 the mayor's office was an honorary post ; thereafter, with a few exceptions, the officials worked in the main office immediately after the Second World War .
