Franz Euler (born December 18, 1804 in Worms ; † December 7, 1873 ibid) was a German restaurateur and mayor of the city of Worms in the period 1852-1856 .

Life

Euler, who owned the “Zum Schwanen” restaurant in Worms in his capacity as a respected restaurateur, was considered a conservative Catholic . In 1852 he succeeded his predecessor Ferdinand Eberstadt as mayor of Worms . Euler, who comes from a wealthy family of landowners and post offices, was elected to the Worms municipal council in 1844, but resigned his mandate prematurely in 1851. A later election, which took place in 1852, he accepted again after the local council had reformed, because the majority of the council was now composed of conservative members. Euler was henceforth mayor of Worms, this office was transferred to him by the state government and conferred by the Grand Duke .

Act as mayor

During the term of office of Franz Euler there were significant changes that went down in the history of the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Worms, for example the opening of the Mainz – Worms – Ludwigshafen railway line, which is important for urban development, and the construction of the first Worms train station . The founding of the cathedral building association in 1856 also falls within his term of office. Furthermore, in the same year an association was founded that had set itself the goal of building a Luther memorial . Its chairman was the conservative local politician Johann Friedrich Eich , who, with great attention and in the presence of the Grand Duke, had the ship's bridge over the Rhine built and put into operation in 1855 .

After Euler's tenure

Euler's prompting to resign his office as mayor in 1856 was evidently a fundamental and insurmountable difference of opinion between him and Johann Friedrich Eich, who was also elected to the municipal council of the city of Worms in the same year.

The search for Euler's successor in office turned out to be difficult; A suitable successor for Euler was not found, so that the local council was forced to dissolve itself according to the rules in force at the time, thus clearing the way for new elections.

Private

Euler has appeared socially as an active member of the Worms Narhalla Committee. He had his will that the city should receive 200 guilders from his estate, which should be used for the benefit of the poor. In his will he also decreed that the money should be used regardless of the religious denomination of the needy people.
