Christian Eckert (economist)
Christian Laurenz Maria Eckert (born March 16, 1874 in Mainz , † June 27, 1952 in Cologne ) was a German professor of economic political science .
Life
Eckert studied law and political science , economic and art history as well as philosophy at the universities of Munich , Giessen and Berlin . In 1897 he was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD and a year later in Berlin as Dr. phil. In 1901 he completed his habilitation in political science in Berlin and then worked as a lecturer in economic political science at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, which opened in 1901 , where he was appointed director of studies of this institution in 1904, succeeding the founding director Hermann Schumacher . In 1907 he initiated the establishment of the Rheinisch-Westfälisches Wirtschaftsarchiv . From 1909 to 1916 he was a member of the Immediatkommission for the preparation of the administrative reform in Prussia and received the title of a secret government council in the following year.
Christian Eckert had worked hard to reopen the old University of Cologne , which had been closed by the French occupiers of the Rhineland in 1798 , and was its first rector from 1919 to 1920 . From 1920 he was executive chairman of the board of trustees of the University of Cologne , which gave him an honorary doctorate in 1922 rer. pole. and made him an honorary citizen of the university in 1926. His research areas included trade policy, world and foreign economics, social and economic history and transport science. He also examined fundamental questions of economic organization and economic policy as well as public finance.
The National Socialists dismissed him from his offices in 1933 because of his political activities in the Center Party and retired in 1934. He moved to Worms , where he was chairman of the industrial supervisory board and from 1946 to 1949 also the city's mayor. After the end of the Second World War he campaigned for the reopening of the university in his hometown of Mainz, where in 1946 he received a visiting professorship for economics and became vice-president and head of the humanities and social sciences class of the Academy of Sciences and Literature as well as honorary senator of the Johannes Gutenberg- University of Mainz .
The University of Cologne formally returned Christian Eckert his full professorship in 1945 and at the same time retired . In 1949 she awarded him the honorary title of Dr. med. and in 1952 the dignity of an honorary senator. Christian Eckert did not end his teaching activity in Cologne until 1952 when he became seriously ill.
Christian Eckert died on June 27, 1952 and was buried in Cologne's Melaten cemetery (corridor 54).
Eckert was a member of the Landsmannschaft Teutonia Bonn student union .
In Cologne-Lindenthal close to the University which is Eckertstraße named after him.
