Adolf Kessel (born November 30, 1957 in Rheindürkheim , today Worms ) is a German politician ( CDU ). He was a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament from 2009 to 2019 and has been Lord Mayor of the city of Worms since then .

Career

After secondary school, Kessel completed an apprenticeship with the police and then worked for the Worms police station until 1990. He then attended the Police College in Wittlich and the Police College for Public Administration in Koblenz. From 1994 to 2009 Kessel was at the Rhineland-Palatinate State Criminal Police Office .

He joined the CDU in 1988. In 1994 he became chairman of the CDU local association in Rheindürkheim, in 2006 deputy chairman of the CDU district association in Worms and in 2013 chairman of the district association. In 1999 he was elected mayor in Worms-Rheindürkheim and the Worms city council, where he became deputy parliamentary group spokesman in 2006. In 2009, Kessel replaced Jeannette Wopperer , who was elected regional director of the Stuttgart Regions Association, as a member of constituency 32 ( Worms ) in the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament .

Kessel is working group spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group for social affairs and labor, commissioner for integration and a member of the committee for social affairs and labor and the committee for society, integration and consumer protection.

On March 2, 2013, Adolf Kessel was elected chairman of the CDA Rhineland-Palatinate.

In 2018, he ran for the CDU in the mayoral election in Worms. In the first ballot on November 4th, Kessel won 30.7 percent of the vote and stood in the runoff against the previous incumbent Michael Kissel ( SPD ). In the runoff election on November 18, according to the preliminary final result, he received 73.1 percent of the votes cast, replacing Kissel as Lord Mayor on July 1, 2019. On the same date, Kessel left the state parliament. His successor in the state parliament is Stephanie Lohr .
