Karl Schlösser (politician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Schlösser (* 1747 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ), † March 14, 1822 in Cologne ) was the mayor of Elberfeld.

Schlösser was born in Elberfeld and baptized there on March 7, 1747. He became a merchant and merchant in Elberfeld. His uncle Isaak Schlösser was already mayor of Elberfeld in 1768 and his cousin Johann Jakob Schlösser in 1773. Schlösser married Magdalena Margareta Reinhard (1748–1819) from Cologne in 1774, with whom he had a child. Schlösser, who was on the list of nominations for mayoral elections for the first time in 1780 and then ran five more times without success, was elected in 1797. Because of his trading business, Schlösser often did not stay in Elberfeld during his one-year term and was unable to carry out his official business. His deputy, predecessor and city judge Heinrich Wilhelm Hölterhoff , had to represent him for a long time. The year after his tenure as mayor, he became a city judge and in 1799 he became a councilor.

In later years he moved with his wife to Cologne, where Schlösser worked as a banker.
