After attending school, Schreyer joined the Bavarian Army in 1912 . As a member of the 10th Bavarian Infantry Regiment König, he met Ernst Röhm, who was an officer at the same time. Even before the First World War , Schreyer was promoted to lieutenant in the war from 1914 to 1918 on the Western Front. In 1919 Schreyer resigned from the army with the rank of first lieutenant . In 1921 he was subsequently given the character of a captain .

From 1919 to 1929 Schreyer ran a private bank that went bankrupt in 1929. He was then detained for three months for unclear financial practices.

On February 1, 1931, at the request of Ernst Röhm, who had recently taken over the post of Chief of Staff of the Sturmabteilung (SA), Schreyer joined this organization as a money manager. In 1931 he became a member of the NSDAP (membership number 455.876). From July 1 to November 20, 1932, he acted as Referent IVa (administration, budget) in the quartermaster staff of the Supreme SA leadership . In this position he was responsible for managing the SA's finances. After a reorganization of the SA leadership, Schreyer held the post of Head of Department IVa (Administration) or Head of the Administrative Office in the staff of the Supreme SA Leadership from November 21, 1932 to June 30, 1934, in which he performed the same tasks . During his time in the Supreme SA leadership, he was initially ranked as an SA Standartenführer before becoming SA Oberführer on November 15, 1931 and finally SA Group Leader on March 1, 1933, shortly after the National Socialists came to power in spring 1933 was promoted.

On June 30, 1934, Schreyer was arrested as part of the Röhm affair . Schreyer escaped being shot in the morning hours of July 2 in the Lichterfelde cadet institute, as the order was received at that time not to carry out any further shootings. However, he was officially expelled from the SA in July 1934 and held in Columbia concentration camp for a long time .
