Karl Siegstad

Karl Kristian Andreas Siegstad (born December 5, 1930 in Aasiaat ; † January 17, 2010 ) was a Greenlandic writer .

Life

Karl Siegstad was the illegitimate son of Nikoline Frederikke Eleonora Helene Siegstad (1911–?), Daughter of the blacksmith Abel Peter Gabriel Siegstad (1864–1942) and his second wife Agathe Rakel Dorthea Gideonsen (1875–?). His mother's half-sister was married to Otto Rosing (1896–1965).

Karl Siegstad was born in Aasiaat, but grew up in Savissivik in northern Greenland. He later moved back to Disko Bay , where he worked as a seaman. Later he lived again in his hometown. There he was a member of the council of the Aasiaat parish for a while . He was also director of the Atuakkiorfik publishing house for several years . Karl Siegstad was best known as a public debater and often wrote letters to the editor in newspapers. He also published several books on ancient Greenlandic culture.

For his debut novel Iluliarsuit oqquanni , which was the only one of his books to be translated into Danish ( I ly bag isfjeldene ), he was nominated for the 1997 Nordic Council Literature Prize. On August 29, 2001 he was awarded the Nersornaat in silver. In 2003 he received the Aronprisen from Atuakkiorfik and in 2009 the Greenland Christmas stamp award. Karl Siegstad died in 2010 at the age of 79.
