Karl Stengel (theologian)

Karl Stengel OSB (born January 29, 1581 in Augsburg , † January 27, 1663 there ) was a German abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Anhausen an der Brenz and an important theological writer of his time.

Life

In 1593 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Sankt Ulrich und Afra in Augsburg , where he made solemn religious vows in 1596. In 1630 he was elected abbot of the Anhausen monastery. As a result of the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War , he was expelled from his monastery in 1632. After returning and three years of efforts to rebuild the devastated monastery, he had to flee again in 1638. In 1647 he finally returned to his professed monastery in Augsburg, where he stayed until his death.

His extensive literary work includes 99 works on church history, order history and hagiography .
