Karl Surkamp
Karl Surkamp (born June 11, 1883 in Bochum , † October 21, 1952 in Gelsenkirchen ) was a German trade unionist and social democratic politician .
Live and act
After elementary school, Surkamp initially trained as a butcher before becoming a miner. He worked in this profession until 1919. Since 1900 Surkamp was a member of the SPD and the free trade union miners' association . For this he worked from 1919 to 1925 as a trade union secretary in Gelsenkirchen. From 1925 to 1933 he was works inspector for the city of Gelsenkirchen. In the SPD, Surkamp was deputy sub-district chairman and from 1917 to 1933 a member of the city council in Buer and also chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the city council of Gelsenkirchen. He was also a member of the Westphalian provincial parliament from 1921 to 1925 and from 1930 to 1933. With the beginning of National Socialist rule, Surkamp was dismissed and was unemployed until 1945. At times he was imprisoned in Herford prison for political reasons .
After the Second World War, Surkamp was initially a member of the appointed provincial parliament of Westphalia and the appointed state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia (from October 2, 1946 to October 21, 1952). He belonged to parliament in the first and second electoral terms for constituency 98 (Gelsenkirchen-Nord).
Honors
A street in his former constituency - Surkampstraße - is named after Karl Surkamp.
