Karl Tannen ( pseudonym Karl Eichwald) (born July 27, 1827 in Leer , † August 13, 1904 in Bremen ) was a German publisher and writer .

biography

Karl Heinrich Theodor Tannen was the son of a ship's captain. He attended school in Leer in East Friesland and trained as a bookseller for four years. He then worked in his profession in Aurich . In 1851 he moved to Bremerhaven . He is said to have been suspected of being a revolutionary there. Around 1852 he went to Bremen and worked in the Küthmann bookstore. In 1865 he acquired the license for a publishing house in Bremen and in 1878 he gave up the publishing house. He then worked as a book auctioneer and book taxator. Tannen - a sociable person - often recited Low German poems and stories.

He was married twice without children.

His work

Between 1848 and 1850 he published two collections of high German poetry. His first works in the Low German language followed in 1856 . He wrote many works under the pseudonym Karl Eichwald , including the Low German proverbs . In 1861 he translated the Reinke Voss into the Low German language. He reissued several older Low German books. In 1873 his publishing house published a commemorative publication on Mayor Johann Smidt and, from 1873 to 1878, the Bremer Bilderbogen with his texts and drawings by Christian Iwan Töbelmann. In 1878, Tannen Wagenfeld published Bremen's folk tales .

Honors

The Royal Vlaamsche Academie voor Taalkunde te Gent made him an honorary member in 1896.
