Karl Werner (entomologist)

Karl "Charly" Werner (born October 30, 1956 in Peiting ; † May 12, 2007 ibid) was a German entomologist ( coleopterology ).

Life

Werner went to school in Schongau and Weilheim in Upper Bavaria and studied political science in Munich. Since 1986 he has been a freelance entomologist specializing in tiger beetles (Cicindelinae). Werner worked with the Natural History Museum , the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, the Zoological State Collection Munich, the Smithsonian Institution , the Congo Museum in Brussels, the Museo La Specola in Florence and the Transvaal Museum in Pretoria.

He was a member of the German, Austrian, Belgian, French and Italian entomological societies.

In addition to around 50 scientific publications, he has produced numerous initial descriptions. Several species (mostly beetles and a butterfly) were named after him.
