Karl Winterhalter

Karl Winterhalter (born November 24, 1911 in Kollmarsreute ; † January 16, 2012 in Meckenbeuren ) was a German entrepreneur and engineer . In 1947 he founded the Winterhalter Gastronom company .

Life

Winterhalter was born in Kollmarsreute and grew up in Endingen am Kaiserstuhl. He attended the watchmaking school in Furtwangen in the Black Forest and then attended the Karlsruhe State Technical College, where he studied electrical engineering and graduated as an engineer in 1935. After completing his studies, he started to work for the aircraft manufacturer Dornier in Friedrichshafen. Through his work at the aircraft company, Winterhalter was exempt from military service and later also from military service.

After the end of the war he worked as an electrician before he later found work as a technician for the French occupation. In 1947 he founded the company "Karl Winterhalter Ing. Household items and electrical appliances" in Friedrichshafen. With modest means, due to a lack of raw materials, he constructed household appliances such as irons and stoves from scrap and waste. Things went uphill in 1948 after the currency reform when a market for raw materials and products could develop again. The first success came with a portable, electrically heated oven, the so-called baking witch, which was shown at the first IBO in Friedrichshafen in 1949. He was the first to work in gastronomy with a specially developed deep fryer. In the 1950s he developed the GS 60, a dishwasher, which became the company's most successful project to date. When series production could start, the company premises turned out to be too small and the company moved to Meckenbeuren . Because of the proximity to other large companies in Meckenbeuren and the resulting difficulty in finding enough skilled workers, another plant was built in Endingen in 1965. After he retired from the business, his son and now his grandson, Jürgen and Ralph Winterhalter, took over management of the company. In 1981 Winterhalter was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his services.
