Karl Wolfgang Barthel

Karl Wolfgang Barthel (born May 9, 1929 in Berlin ; † December 20, 2018 ) was a German writer and journalist .

Life

Barthel was born in Berlin in 1929 as the son of the poet and writer Max Barthel (1893–1975) and his wife Luise geb. Möbius (1898–1998) born. He attended elementary school in Berlin and grammar school in Dresden, which he left in 1949 after obtaining his university entrance qualification. From 1947 to 1950 he studied English in Leipzig and Berlin and from 1958 to 1960 pedagogy in Worms.

Professionally, he worked in Berlin from 1950 to 1957 as a reporter for “ Stern ”, “ Spiegel ” and “Constanze” and during this time interviewed numerous well-known personalities from theater, film and politics such as Heinz Rühmann, Karlheinz Böhm, Paul Hubschmid and Luise Schröder. 1957/58 he represented the "Constanze" in Düsseldorf. From 1958 to 1960 he edited an advertising magazine while studying.

From 1960 to 1965 he was a lecturer in a specialist educational publisher in Bad Godesberg, and from 1965 until his retirement in 1989 he was part of the education department of Bayer AG in Leverkusen, where he looked after commercial apprentices with high school diplomas. Since 1987 he has been working as a choral songwriter. Since then, over 1,200 settings by him have appeared.

Barthel lived in Berlin and was widowed. From 2003 he lived with Irina Magritz, the widow of the architect, painter and graphic artist Kurt Magritz .
