Baron Karl Leopold von Stengel (born August 9, 1765 in Mannheim , † April 20, 1818 in Munich ) was a German major general in the Bavarian army .

Life

Karl von Stengel was the son of the Electoral Palatinate State Councilor Johann Georg Anton Freiherr von Stengel (1721–1798) and his wife Maria Christine Edle von Hauer.

In 1783 he was a second lieutenant in the 3rd Grenadier Regiment, from 1795 to 1799 a major in the 5th Regiment , and in 1800 in the 7th Regiment . In the Second Coalition War , von Stengel led the field battalion of the 7th Regiment. In the Battle of Hohenlinden on December 3, 1800, he saved his troops from being captured by the French Army of the Rhine .

On March 19, 1802, he was transferred to the 4th Light Battalion. There he was given command on March 27th, after having been a lieutenant colonel since 1803. At the beginning of December 1805, his battalion was involved in a battle between around 1,600 French and Bavarian soldiers near Stöcken . This battle resulted from the battle of Austerlitz .

From September 23, 1806 (until April 1, 1809) von Stengel was Colonel and Commander of the 7th Regiment, with which he was involved in several battles against the Prussian Army . On April 1, 1809, he was appointed major general and commanded the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Division Crown Prince Ludwig during a campaign .

Karl Freiherr von Stengel retired in 1812, six years before his death .

On August 19, 1816 he was appointed first councilor and conductor of the government of the Bavarian Rhine District.
