Karlheinz Scherler

Karlheinz Scherler (* 1945 ; † November 18,  2007 ) was a German sports teacher and university professor .

Life

From 1969, Scherler worked in the educational  science department at the University of Hamburg , and from 1976 as a scientific adviser and professor for educational science (sports didactics). From 1989 to 1991 and 1995 he was director of the institute and dean between 1997 and 1999.

In February 2007, Scherler took early retirement and was awarded the Golden Badge of Honor by the German Association for Sports Science (DVS) on the occasion of his retirement from university . On November 18th of the same year he died after a long illness. On the occasion of his death, he was described in an obituary by the Federal Institute for Sports Science as a “thought leader in sports science”, who enjoyed an international reputation as a sports educator.

Scherler was one of the founders of the sports education section of the German Association for Sports Science and acted as its spokesman from 1987 to 1989. From 1989 to 1995 he was a member of the DSV board, from 1991 to 1995 he was its president.

School sport and sport didactics were the focus of his research.
