The Carmelite Monastery of Stella Maris ( Latin for "Star of the Sea" ) is located on the slopes of the Carmel Mountains in Haifa , Israel. The name Stella Maris is an invocation of Mary , mother of Jesus Christ .

The 19th century church building and Stella Maris monastery are located on the western slope of Mount Carmel in the Israeli port city of Haifa. This is where the Carmelite Order has its world center , which is one of the most important and magnificent buildings in Haifa.

history

According to the 1st Book of Kings , it happened on Mount Carmel in the 9th century BC. For a test of power between Elijah and the Baal prophets ( 1 Kings 18.37-39  EU ). The pilgrimage site of Stella Maris was built over a grotto that commemorates Elijah's stay .

In the 12th century, under the rule of the Crusaders , hermits first settled caves on Mount Carmel to imitate the life of the prophet Elijah .

Due to the conquest of Haifa by the Mamluks , the sanctuaries of Carmel were destroyed in 1291.

In 1836 the current church building was completed.

In the 20th century, some well-known architects rebuilt and expanded the facility, including Al Mansfeld .
