The Karner in Hardegg

The Karner is a listed building in Hardegg in the Waldviertel . He is considered the oldest Karner in Lower Austria .

description

The unplastered, broken stone built between 1150 and 1160 Romanesque round building with a truncated conical roof and small, steep arched windows has two storeys. Its construction is similar to the older rotunda in Znojmo an der Thaya in the neighboring Czech Republic .

The Karner was built on a step next to the Hardegg parish church . When viewed from the cemetery, the building appears low, while when viewed from the north it looks like a high tower.

A chapel with a domed vault was set up in the room accessible from the cemetery . A Gothic tracery window was added over the east side of the apse with a bricked altar .

The entrance to the crypt is one floor below on the east side of the Karner.
