Karol Rebro

Karol Rebro (born October 27, 1912 in Horovce ; † October 31, 2000 in Bratislava ) was a Slovak legal scholar , legal historian and rector of the Comenius University in Bratislava .

Live and act

Rebro studied law at the Comenius University in Bratislava from 1931 to 1936 . After completing his doctorate, he worked as a research assistant for Roman law under the two Romanists Miroslav Boháček and Václav Budil, who worked in Bratislava . After studying in Italy, Rebro completed his habilitation in Bratislava in 1940 with a treatise on cohabitation in Roman law, whereupon he took up a professorship there. After the Second World War, Rebro initially served as dean of the Bratislava Faculty of Law, and from 1949 to 1950 he was rector of the University of Bratislava. In 1951, however, Rebro had to leave the law faculty of the University of Bratislava for political reasons. From 1951 he worked in the university library and from 1954 at the Slovak Academy of Sciences . In 1969 he returned to the University of Bratislava as a full professor and resumed his studies and lectures in Roman law. Until his retirement he taught and researched there.

Rebro was one of the most important Romanists in Slovakia. He has penned over 200 publications on Roman law and its relation to contemporary Slovak law. He also wrote the first textbook on Roman law in the Slovak language. In addition, Rebro published some works on Slovak legal history, which were mainly written during the time he spent outside of the faculty.
