Karolina Styczyńska (born June 17, 1991 in Warsaw ) is a Polish shogi player.

Career

She studied computer science at the University of Warsaw and currently lives in Kofu .

She got to know the game Shogi in 2008 through the Japanese anime series Naruto and quickly found the game very interesting. Since there were no other players, let alone a club, in Warsaw at that time, she taught herself the game by herself and played on various Internet servers. From 2009 she also took part in official tournaments in Europe. Her rather aggressive style of play was noticed by the Japanese professional player Madoka Kitao , who invited Styczynska to Tokyo on a two-week study trip in 2011 . During this time she played a few games at the JSA and reached the 4th amateur dan .

As a result, she was invited in 2012 to take part in the 2nd Ricoh Cup Oza women's tournament as a non-Japanese representative . Here she was the first non-Japanese woman to beat a professional shogi player. Also in 2013 she was invited to the 3rd Ricoh Cup as a representative, although she did not get beyond the preliminary round, but managed to beat a professional player again.

On October 1, 2015 , she was awarded the 3rd Kyū by the Japan Shogi Association after three wins and one loss in a major Tokyo tournament . After winning a preliminary round game in the 44th women's Meijin against Minami Sadamasu , 1st Dan on February 20, 2017, she was awarded the 2nd Kyu. On April 1, 2017 , she was awarded the 1st Kyu for seven victories in one year. She was the first non-Japanese person to achieve the 3rd kyu and is now the first non-Japanese professional in Shogi.

Karolina Styczynska has been the official ambassador of the city of Kofu since March 30, 2016 .

She is a student of Katagami Daisuke (6th Dan ).
