Occurrence

Systematics

In addition to the nominate form of the Carpathian bellflower, a dwarf form has been described as the variety Campanula carpatica var. Turbinata (Schott, Nyman et Kotschy) Nichols. This is more compact, reaches heights of 10 to 15 centimeters and has flowers up to 50 millimeters wide.

use

The Carpathian bellflower is widely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens and dry stone walls. It has been in culture since 1770 at the latest. There are numerous varieties whose crown color ranges from dark blue to dark purple to light purple with a white center. The 'Warley White' variety is summer green and has a lavender-blue crown filled with 4 crown quarters.

The Carpathian bellflower forms hybrids with other bellflower species:

  • Campanula carpatica var. Turbinata × Campanula raineri : Campanula × pseudoraineri hort., The leaves are hairy gray.
  • Campanula carpatica var. Turbinata or Campanula pulla × Campanula waldsteiniana : Campanula × stansfieldii hort., The crown is broad-bellied, erect to nodding and purple.
  • Campanula carpatica × Campanula cochleariifolia : Campanula × haylodgensis hort., The leaf blade is only 1 (to 2) centimeters long.
