Karpe (formerly Karpe Diem ) is a Norwegian rap group that was founded in 2000. The group consists of Magdi Omar Ytreeide Abdelmaguid and Chirag Rashmikant Patel. The DJ Marius Thingvald (also known as En DJ som heter Marius ) mostly takes part in the stage shows.
history
Chirag Patel (born July 20, 1984 ) studied media and communication at Oslo University from 2003 to 2007 . During the same period Magdi Abdelmaguid (born June 3, 1984 ) studied African and Asian studies at the University of Oslo . However, the two met before at the Oslo Commercial High School and founded the Duo Karpe Diem in 2000.
After founding the group, the two successfully took part in Ungdommens kulturmønstring (UKM) and won the competition. They continue their work in the field of Norwegian hip-hop .
First publications (2004 - 2007)
On May 18, 2004, their debut EP Glasskår was released, the song "Skjønner Du" made it into the VG-lista Topp20. The lyrics of the songs dealt primarily with their experiences as young people with a migration background. Over 5000 copies of the EP were sold. In the time that followed, the duo or both of them worked as soloists in various music projects by other musicians.
In 2006, their first album, Rett Fra Hjendung, was released . The album made the band known throughout Norway and sold more than 18,000 copies. Piano , the album's first single, stayed in the Norwegian charts for 16 weeks. For the album, the band received the 2007 alarm prize in the hip-hop / rap category.
Continuing successes (2008 - 2014)
In 2008 the singles Stjerner , Under overflaten , Vestkantsvartinga (with Pumba) and Fireogtyvegods from the album Fire Vegger , which was released on September 29, 2008, were released. It became the best-selling hip-hop album in the Norwegian language and stayed in the Norwegian album charts for 28 weeks. For the album they won the Spellemann Prize 2008 in the hip-hop category. They also appeared at the award ceremony with the song Stjerner .
In May 2010 the duo won the new Bendiksen Prize and received prize money of 100,000 crowns for it. They also released their third album Aldri solgt en løgn . For the first time, one of her albums was also rated positively by music critics. It became the first Norwegian hip-hop album to reach number 1 in the Norwegian album charts. In 2011 they won the Årets Spellemann. This year they also took part in the memorial concert for the victims of the July 22nd attacks.
After separating from their former record label, they released the album Kors på halsen, kniv i hjetzt, mor og far i døden in 2012. This album was again able to reach number 1 in the charts. It contains, among other things, the single Toyota'n til Magdi ( German : Magdis Toyota ) . The car that was sung about was then auctioned for a good cause. In 2013 they published the biography Dødtid - Bilder og turnénotater.
Heisann Montebello (2015-2017)
In November 2015 they started the Heisann Montebello project . The songs on the accompanying album, which they all also released as a single with a music video, became more political again. For example, in the single Lett å være rebell i kjellerleiligheten din , they also criticized the then Justice Minister Anders Anundsen . In their song Hvite menn som pusher 50 , they paint the picture of a society dominated by older white men. The music video for it received the award for the best music video at the Spellemannprisen 2016. They were also awarded a Spellemann for the best musicians in the Urban category and one for the album of the year. They also received an award from P3 Gull for the best song of the year ( Lett å være rebell i kjellerleiligheten din ) and for the best live performance.
In 2017 they went on a tour with the album, during which they gave three sold out concerts in the Oslo Spektrum . The film Adjø Montebello served as the end of the project . The film won an award at the Amanda Film Awards in the Scenography and Product Design category.
Renaming and fifth album (since 2018)
In 2018 they renamed the band from Karpe Diem to Karpe. In 2019 they released the album SAS Plus / SAS Pussy. The album was called Raphörspiel and was not divided into different songs.
In November 2019, the duo were again honored as Live Artist of the Year at the P3 Gull Music Prize.
