Qarshi , also Karschi ( Russian Карши Karschi ) is the seventh largest city in Uzbekistan . The population in 2006 was 226,905, while in 1979 108,225 people lived here. The city is an urban district and the capital of Qashqadaryo Province in the south of the country.

Qarshi officially celebrated its 2,700 year history in 2008. The city was formerly called Nachschab , arab. Nasaf , from the 14th century Qarshi and from 1922 to 1937 Behbudiy after Mahmudhoʻja Behbudiy who was killed here .

Qarshi was once one of the most important cities in Sogdia . Around Qarshi there are over 300 ruins from ancient and medieval times. In the 18th century, the city in the Emirate of Bukhara gained importance.
