Karel Steklý (born October 9, 1903 in Prague , Austria-Hungary , † July 5, 1987 in Prague, Czechoslovakia ) was a Czech film director and screenwriter. He is considered one of the great old masters of Czech film.

Steklý wrote screenplays as early as the 1930s, was also active as a film actor and switched to directing after the end of the Second World War . Here the young filmmaker succeeded in 1947 with the historical film Die Sirene (original: Siréna ), an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Marie Majerovás , an internationally highly decorated film that thematized the social situation of miners in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The film was awarded the " Golden Lion " at the Venice Biennale in 1947 . Further productions followed, including the 1957 film adaptation of Jaroslav Hašek's novel The Brave Soldier Schwejk .
