Karsten Bäron (born April 24, 1973 in Berlin ) is a former German soccer player and today's soccer coach . During his active career he played almost exclusively for Hamburger SV .
Career
Career as a player
With 28 goals in 30 games for FC Hertha 03 Zehlendorf in the 1991/92 season in the third-rate NOFV amateur league, Karsten Bäron was already in the focus of German professional clubs as a teenager. The then 19-year-old then moved from his Berlin youth club to Hamburger SV at the beginning of the 1992/93 season . On September 26, 1992 he came to his first assignment in the 1st Bundesliga . This was followed by 123 appearances until 2000. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on October 23, 1992 in a 2-1 home defeat against FC Schalke 04 . Bäron scored a total of 39 goals in the Bundesliga.
He also played for the German U-21 national team between 1992 and 1996 . He scored three goals in 16 games, but because of his long injury he never played in the German national soccer team .
In his prime, Uli Hoeneß tried to bring him to Bayern Munich , but because of a good offer from HSV, Bäron stayed in Hamburg. After a long break from injury from 1997 to 1999, the striker made his comeback on December 18, 1999 in HSV's 6-1 win over MSV Duisburg . He made another six appearances in the successful 1999/2000 season, in which Hamburger SV reached the Champions League qualification with him .
In the same year, Bäron finally had to end his active career after eight operations on his knee , whereupon he became a youth coach at HSV.
"Air Bäron"
His nickname " Air Bäron " became known through a banner that the postman Frank Niemann from Westbevern, a loyal HSV fan and inventor of the nickname, still hangs up today - long after Bäron's retirement - in numerous stadiums at club and international matches.
Career as a coach
On January 1, 2006, he replaced Joachim Philipkowski as coach of the HSV regional league team and managed to stay in the 3rd division with the team. On December 18, 2008, Karsten Bäron and his assistant trainer Frank Pieper were released from their duties with immediate effect, after which the employment relationship was terminated by mutual agreement in 2010. The successor as coach was Rodolfo Cardoso .
