Zurich barracks (armory 3/4 with armory)

The barracks Zurich is a former military occupied barracks at the Sihl in the city of Zurich in Switzerland . Today the area is largely open to the public.

history

In the 1860s, the old military buildings near today's main station had to give way to the construction of Bahnhofstrasse . The barracks in Aussersihl , on the former ski jump area , were built as a replacement . Between 1864 and 1869 the stables between Sihl and Schanzengraben and the armories were built according to the plans of the then state building inspector Johann Caspar Wolff . It was not until 1873 to 1876 that the barracks with parade ground , designed by Wolff's successor Johann Jakob Müller, followed. The elongated armory wing is comparable to the arsenal in Vienna from the same period . Until the First World War, the parade meadow was an important urban open space as a sports, festival and meeting place. From the First World War, the facility was used exclusively for military purposes and was closed to the civilian population. The stables were on the other side of the Sihl on a narrow strip between the river and the Schanzengraben .

In 1987, after the military moved to the Reppischtal , studies were carried out on other public uses of the barracks area.

Todays use

Today the Zeughaushof and half of the parade ground are freely accessible on the site. On the other, fenced-in half of the meadow is the provisional district prison, which is to be relocated to a new building in 2020. The former stables and facilities on the other side of the Sihl now house a restaurant, bars, the Gessnerallee theater and the performing arts and film department of the Zurich University of the Arts . The freely accessible part of the facility is owned by the Canton of Zurich and is maintained by the City of Zurich.

The buildings in the barracks area are classified as objects of protection of cantonal importance.

future

The structural condition of the buildings is sometimes very poor. The city and canton of Zurich have been planning extensive renovations and conversions for decades. All attempts failed either in parliament or at the ballot box. In January 2020, the city and canton presented a new template to the public. By 2026, a. an educational center for adults is created. The ground floor is to be opened up to the general public and «public-oriented uses».
