Kaspar von Schaumberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kaspar von Schaumberg († May 20 or September 15 or 16, 1429 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Münsterschwarzach from 1409 to 1429 .

Münsterschwarzach before Schaumberg

The centuries before Kaspar von Schaumberg took office were very problematic for the abbey in Münsterschwarzach: Despite poor sources, fires accumulated in the 13th century, which severely affected the monastery. At the turn of the 14th century attempts were made to repair the damage, but at the same time a split began in the convent , which led to a heavy loss of property for the monastery.

At the beginning of the 15th century the convent was split again, the mismanagement under Abbot Kraft von Bieberehren was to blame. So the Würzburg prince-bishop put an innkeeper at his side. This did not go far enough for the monks, they wanted to remove Abbot Kraft. Hildebrand Zollner , the candidate of the convention and the predecessor of Schaumberg, then only ruled from 1401 to 1403, while Kraft is handed down to 1409.

Life

Little is known about the origins and early life of Kaspar von Schaumberg. Kaspar was part of the noble von Schaumberg family. He probably came from the Würzburg area, as he was first handed down as a member of the convent of the Würzburg city monastery St. Burkard . In this role he appeared in the sources before 1404. Within the monastery he worked as provost and managed the areas in Aub that were subordinate to the monastery . Here it is handed down on June 2, 1404 and June 16, 1407.

After Münsterschwarzach came Schaumberg when he was from the antipope Johannes XXIII. was promoted to abbot of the Main Abbey. This was preceded by a papal decree authorizing the abbot of the Würzburg Schottenkloster to invest Kaspar with the abbey. It was not until January 7, 1411, however, that the successor for his office as Auber Propst was determined. The only official act of Abbot Kaspar von Schaumberg was the confirmation of the monastery possessions at the Council of Constance on September 1, 1417.

Again, the abbot did not operate in the spirit of the convention and was deposed by it towards the end of the twenties. Shortly thereafter, Kaspar von Schaumberg initiated legal proceedings aimed at withdrawing his dismissal, but died before results could be obtained. According to the monastery chronicles, Abbot Kaspar died on September 15 or 16, 1429, while he is noted in the Münsterschwarzach necrology under May 20.
