Kastus Jesawitau ( Belarusian Кастусь Езавітаў ; born November 17, 1893 in Daugavpils , today Latvia ; † May 23, 1946 in Minsk ) was a Belarusian political and social activist, publicist and translator.

Life

In February 1918 Kastus Jesawitau became the commander of Minsk and at that time was a member of the Rada BNR . From 1918 to 1921 he helped organize Belarusian anti-communist units. From 1921 to 1939, Jesavitau lived in Lithuania , where he was active in Belarusian political circles. Jesawitau was arrested several times by the Lithuanian authorities for his political activities. From December 1943 he served in the Belarusian Central Council , a puppet government of the German occupiers during World War II . At the end of 1944 he lived in Germany and held the title of Defense Minister and General Inspector of the Belarusian Defense Forces . Jesavitau was active in the government in exile of the Belarusian Central Council and tried to organize a Belarusian anti-Soviet guerrilla . In April 1945 he was captured by Soviet agents and taken to Minsk, where he was tortured and executed in 1946 .
