Katakolo ( Greek Κατάκολο ( n. Sg. )) Is a port of the western Greek municipality of Pyrgos in the Peloponnese . Together with the small coastal town of Agios Andreas, it forms the local community Katakolo ( Τοπική Κοινότητα Κατακόλου Topikí Kinótita Katakólou ) and has a total of 513 inhabitants.

location

The local community Katakolo ( Τοπική Κοινότητα Κατακόλου Topikí Kinótita Katakólou ) extends over 3,747 square kilometers on the south oriented Katakolo Peninsula, the Gulf of Kyparissia ( Κυπαρισσιακός Κόλπος Kyparissiakos Kólpos in the north to) the Ionian Sea separating out and by a more than 80 meters high, wooded ridge is criss-crossed. From ancient times the name Ichthys ( Ἰχθῦς ) has been handed down for the headland by several authors . On the east side of the peninsula on the Bay of Katakolo ( Όρμος Κατακόλου Órmos Katakólou ) is the village of Katakolo with one of the most important cruise ports in Greece. Towards the southern tip of Cape Katakolo ( Ακρωτήρι Κατάκολο Akrotíri Katákolo ) is the Katakolo lighthouse , which was listed in 2001 . To the northwest of Katakolo on the Tigani Bay ( Όρμος Τηγάνι Órmos Tigáni ) and the rocky island of Tigani ( Τηγάνι ) lies the small town of Agios Andreas with the remains of the fortified ancient city of Pheia ( Φειά ), the former port of Olympia . The Byzantine castle Pondikokastro ( Ποντικόκαστρο ) located above Agios Andreas was built on the ancient acropolis of Pheias. To the north of it, the approximately 30 m high Katakolo Pass forms the connection to the Peloponnese peninsula.

Administrative structure and population development

Katakolo was confirmed in 1879 as a settlement of the then community Letrini ( Δήμος Λετρίνων Dímos Letrínon ), in 1912 it was spun off as a rural community Katakolo ( Κοινότητα Κατακώλου Kinótita Katakólou ). The port of Limin Katakolou ( Λιμήν Κατακώλου ) was recognized as a settlement in 1920 and was attached to the main town of Katakolo as early as 1928. With the change of the Greek spelling from Κατάκωλο to Κατάκολο in 1940, Alkyon ( Αλκυών ) was confirmed as a settlement and in 1961 it was incorporated into the main town. In 1971 the coastal town of Agios Andreas was recognized as a rural community settlement. With the territorial reform in 1997 , the connection with 17 other rural communities to what was then the municipality of Pyrgos took place . This in turn merged with the implementation of the administrative reform in 2010 as a municipality in the new municipality of Pyrgos , where Katakolo has since formed a local community.
